Topping Thriller was a near impossibility, but Michael showed that the five-year gap between the two albums had been put to good use. The album quickly became another multi-million seller. It sold over 30 million copies.
BAD was the first of his albums to debut as No. 1 on the Billboard 200, where it remained for the next six consecutive weeks. The album hit No.
1 in
35 countries. It had 7 hit singles, 5 of which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, more than any other album to date. Michael enjoyed creative freedom on this album and wrote 9 of the album’s 11 tracks.
Michael set off on his first solo world tour to promote the album. It was one of the largest and most successful in history. A 16 month extravaganza that began in September of 1987 and finished in January of 1989, with a total of 123 shows which played in 15 countries.
The tour was sponsored by Pepsi, and would garner 2 entries in the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest grossing tour in history, grossing over $125 million, and the tour with the largest attended audience.

Well over 4 million people clapped, cheered and screamed their appreciation and adulation of Michael during the BAD Tour.
Even the biggest venues - including Wembley Stadium and Aintree racecourse - could not house all the fans desperate to see their idol perform. A record crowd of 125,000 packed out Aintree, home of the famous Grand National steeplechase. It was the highest attendance figure of the entire tour.
During the tour, Michael would ensure that 400 tickets for each show were reserved for under-privileged children to watch for free. He also visited and gave donations to local hospitals, orphanages and other charities from his concert proceeds.
The BAD Concert, created and staged by Michael himself, featured gigantic 240-inch video screens, designed to bring Michael’s magic up close and personal to fans through-out the stadiums.
On stage, Michael was the ultimate showman bringing applauding audiences to their feet with acts of creative genius. Fans were treated to a visual as well as vocal feast. There was a dazzling laser show, smoke clouds and choreographed explosions.
If there was still any doubt as to whether Michael really was the biggest thing since Elvis and The Beatles, it was settled once and for all during this Era of his career. Michael dominated the 1980’s.!!!

Michael set the standard for concepts, dance routines, storylines and innovative special effects. His videos utilized the latest in film technology, having the hottest directors at the helm and noteworthy cameo appearances, proving Michael to be not only an entertainer of extraordinary magnitude, but also an innovator in the way audiences viewed music.
As time went on, Michael continued to push the boundaries by presenting the latest in video technology and special effects, and reaching even higher levels of achievement in choreography. The music industry owes him a debt of gratitude that can never be fully repaid.
No one before him or during his lifetime, and no one after him will be able to match the extraordinary depth of talent possessed by such a unique entertainer as Michael Joseph Jackson.

Produced by Quincy Jones; co-produced by Michael, who wrote nine of the eleven tracks on the album.

Project started with Michael and Quincy sifting through the 60 or more songs Michael had written himself. ‘Fifty percent of the battle,’ said Quincy, ‘is trying to figure out which songs to record - it’s total instinct.’

From Michael ~ Why did it take so long to make BAD? The answer is that Quincy and I decided that this album should be as close to perfect as humanly possible. A perfectionist has to take his time; he shapes and he molds and he sculpts that thing until it’s perfect. He can’t let it go before he’s satisfied; he can’t. If it’s not right, you throw it away and do it over. You work that thing till it’s just right. When it’s as perfect as you can make it, you put it out there. That’s the difference between a No. 30 record and a No. 1 record that stays No. 1 for weeks.
We worked on BAD for a long time. Years. In the end, it was worth it because we were satisfied with what we had achieved, but it was difficult too. There was a lot of tension because we felt we were competing with ourselves. It’s very hard to create something when you feel like you’re in competition with yourself because no matter how you look at it, people are always going to compare BAD to Thriller. I think I have a slight advantage in all of this because I always do my best work under pressure.

The original album cover, which showed a close-up of Michael’s face covered with a black patterned lace net, was rejected by Walter Yetnikoff, President of CBS Records. The eventual cover was photographed during a 15 minute break from the BAD video shoot.

From Bruce Swedien - Michael’s Recording Engineer ~
Quincy, Michael and I were comfortably ensconced in Westlake Audio’s beautiful new Studio D, on Santa Monica Boulevard in LA, recording Michael’s new solo album BAD. The first session on the BAD album was done on Jan. 5, 1987. Westlake Audio had very recently installed a brand-new, quite large Harrison MR-2 desk of 56 inputs in their lovely new Studio D. For the time, 56 inputs was an extremely large mixing desk and it sounded absolutely fantastic!
When we started work on the album, the title song had a working title of “Pee!” Now that I think about it, I think we even called the album Pee as well. The name Pee was a Quincy name, of course. Quincy told me that the title song, (at that time named Pee) was going to be a duet for Michael and Prince.

I remember that Quincy said that the concept for the duet video was a fight scene, a street fight thing, with Prince coming to kick Michael’s ass. Can you imagine the video with Michael’s opening lyric being sung by him to Prince: “Your butt is mine?” I was there for a couple of the meetings with Prince and Michael, Quincy and all. Personally, I think that after meeting with Michael and Quincy, Prince realized that he couldn’t win this duet/duel with Michael, artistically or otherwise, and pulled out. I also think that Prince left the project because he thought Michael wasn’t making the song dark enough. To Prince’s credit, when he left the studio he turned and said to us, “It will be a big hit, even if I am not on it!”
After a while Michael wrote the incredible lyric for BAD, and the project and the title song, were then known as BAD. The video for the song was directed by Martin Scorsese and featured an appearance by a then-unknown Wesley Snipes. BAD was one of the five No. 1 hit singles from the album.

I think Quincy’s casting of the band was brilliant, with Jimmy Smith, the jazz organist, playing the Hammond B-3 and the MIDI organ solo. Michael does a great mouth percussion part on BAD that I call How Now Brown Cow.
If I had one overall comment about the sound of BAD, I would have to say that this album has the widest variety of sound fields. The huge-sounding rhythm section on The Way You Make Me Feel is a shuffle rhythm, which makes for a fantastic dance track. Man In The Mirror is a popular music masterpiece.

The BAD Tour Goes To Japan ~ from Bruce Swedien ~
To kick off Michael’s BAD Tour, it was decided that all of the crew would fly to Japan together. Happily, Bea and I were included. For this, we had a huge Boeing 747 jumbo jet. While we were waiting for our flight in the VIP lounge at LAX, a courier who brought us a tape from Stevie Wonder met us. It was addressed to me. It was a 24-track tape of a song that Michael was going to sing on for a duet with Stevie. Stevie’s voice was already on the tape. Michael was to overdub his voice on the tape in Tokyo.
Marlon Brando stopped by to say goodbye to his son Miko, who was going along with Michael on the trip, as security.
When our plane landed at Narita Airport part of the terminal had been closed to all but us and 1500 members of the press. Big mistake! When the door of the plane opened, first off the plane were two of Michael’s security guards, and then Michael, his manager Frank DiLeo, Quincy, Christine, Bea, and then me.
The members of the press had been given small wooden ladders of varying heights to stand on. All 1500 of them! Soon all hell broke loose, as these photographers and reporters, from all over the globe, shoved, pushed, and shouted at Michael. Frank DiLeo yelled out for us to make a circle around Michael, quick! We did! It was total pandemonium.

The Slam-Dunk Sisters ~ from Bruce Swedien ~
Michael started a wonderful tradition during the recording of BAD. Every Friday evening about 5 p.m., Michael’s cooks from the ranch, Catherine Ballard and Laura Raynor, would come to the studio and cook an absolutely delicious evening meal for the entire studio crew. Eventually, it became Family Night. Family members and friends of the crew, along with their assorted pets, were included in this happy event.
Michael’s cooks were absolutely top-notch culinary experts. Quincy nicknamed them The Slam-Dunk Sisters because every dinner they did for us was a winner! We had incredible delicious homemade tomato soup every dinner every Friday evening! Ten-course turkey dinner one Friday! Ten-course meatloaf dinner next Friday! It was incredible! That tradition that Michael started made us feel like a real family. This same tradition continued through the recording of his albums Dangerous and HIStory, Book I.

BAD was Michael’s last album produced with Quincy Jones.

BAD spent 18 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s R&B albums chart, and 6 weeks at No. 1 on the Pop albums chart, in the States, and 5 weeks at No. 1 in the UK.

No. 1 in more than 20 countries, including: Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Hong Kong, Israel, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and Zimbabwe.

Written and recorded by Michael, for his solo album of the same name.
Michael wrote the words and music for the albums super-hot title track. It’s a radical, rousing rocker and, of course, the basis for the exciting video. You know it, it rocks, it swings, it’s BAD!

Working title, before Michael penned the lyrics: Pee.

From Michael ~ BAD is a song about the street. It’s about this kid from a bad neighborhood who gets to go away to a private school. He comes back to the old neighborhood when he’s on a break from school and the kids from the neighborhood start giving him trouble. He sings, “I’m bad, you’re bad, who’s bad, who’s the best?” He’s saying when you’re strong and good, then you’re BAD.

Originally intended as a duet with one of Michael’s main rivals in the 1980’s Prince.
Michael’s idea was to have him and Prince square off in the short film, taking turns to sing and dance, in order to determine who was the baddest. Although Prince turned Michael down, he did submit Wouldn’t You Love To Love Me, a song he had originally demoed in 1976, for BAD. Michael passed, so Prince gave the song to Taja Sevelle, for her self-titled 1987 album.

‘I was there for a couple of meetings with Prince and Michael, Quincy and all,’ said Bruce Swedien. ‘Personally, I think that after meeting with Michael, Quincy, Freddy DeMann and his team, Prince realized that he couldn’t win this duet/duel with Michael, artistically or otherwise - and he pulled out. He left the building, so to speak…’

From Bruce Swedien, Michael’s Recording Engineer ~ The shower at Westlake Studio D, a room that found itself being put to good use during the recording of BAD. Handclaps were recorded in this room, and if you listen closely to the album, you might hear the character that this small room lent to the recording - the short delay and the echo produced in that room did lend itself very well to the recording as a whole. So even if that was not the intended use of that particular room, it did indeed come in handy during the recording of BAD.

Second single lifted from BAD, hit No. 1 on the Hot 100 for 2 weeks and the R&B singles chart for 3 weeks, in the States. Charted at No. 3 in the UK, where a limited edition red vinyl 12” single was issued.

Short film directed by Martin Scorsese, loosely based on the true story of Edmund Perry, a young black man shot dead when he returned home to Harlem, NY, from a private college.
Around 18 minutes long, with a lengthy opening shot in black/white, in which Michael took on a serious acting role for the first time - gang members included a young, and at the time unknown, Wesley Snipes.
The video was shot totally on location on the east coast. School scenes were filmed at the Master’s School in Dobbs Ferry, NY, renamed The Lunston School for the camera. The musical, Technicolor segment of the short film was filmed at Hoyt-Schermerhorn subway station in Brooklyn. An actual commuter train was also leased for part of the film. Cast and crew rode the train for over 5 hours to shoot the sequence.
More than a hundred actors, dancers and extras took part in the production, one of the most complicated, most expensive videos ever made.
The video revisited the theme of teen angst and urban rebelliousness, but with a different perspective from Beat It. It also marked the introduction of sexual movements into Michael’s choreography.
Michael stars as a New York City kid named Daryl who leaves the old neighborhood to attend a prestigious prep school. When he comes home, Daryl finds that it’s not so easy to fit into his old crowd again. For the scenes in which he attempts to convince his nemesis, played by an emerging Wesley Snipes, that he is as street-smart as ever, Michael is decked out in black leather, belts, zippers, studs, buckles and chains with a tough expression to match.
The subway scenes feature some slick moves from Michael during his supremely choreographed performance, along with the sexy moves that made him distinct: the crotch grabbing and the pelvic thrusts. He does enough to assure the doubters that he is still ‘bad’, and the feature ends with a brotherly handshake. When Snipe’s character leaves at the end, content with what he has seen, Michael reverts to his scholarly style in the preppy outfit.
Short film premiered on Aug. 31st 1987, on the TV special, Michael Jackson: The Magic Returns.

BAD: Pepsi Commercial - with new lyrics written by Michael in 1986 - registered with the United States Copyright Office in Mar. 1987. Series of commercials, also featuring Billie Jean, ran as follows: The Jacksons, The Jacksons & Kids, The Magic Begins, The Dressing Room, The Chase, The Chopper, The Museum, The Finale, Looking For Me?

In late 1988, Sammy Davis, Jr. performed a comedy version of BAD during one of his concerts. Before his performance, he said of Michael: ‘I’ve seen him grow from a small boy to this huge star, and it’s frightening to see where else he’ll take it to.’ Michael and choreographer Michael Peters helped out Sammy, on some break dancing steps for the film, Cry Of The City.

Featured as a sample in I Got The Money, from the stage musical Sisterella, which Michael supported financially.

Written - reputedly after he picked up a speeding ticket - by Michael, and recorded for his BAD album.
According to Quincy, Michael had written the song after he received a traffic ticket, causing him to arrive late to the recording studio. After Michael told Quincy about it, Quincy told him to write how he felt about it therefore turning it into a song later.
Although, Michael did not perform the song during his BAD Tour, nor any of his other tours.

Michael’s special sound hit’s the freeways runnin’ in this power-packed rocker. Once it grabs you, it holds you tight and won’t let you go!

Short film, mixing claymation with real life footage, included in Michael’s film, Moonwalker.
In the short film, Michael, in an attempt to avoid and outrun over zealous fans and paparazzi, disguises himself as a rabbit named Spike. During the chase, he morphs into other celebrities, including Sylvester Stallone and Pee-Wee Herman. After finally losing the fans and paparazzi, he removes the costume, which comes to life and challenges him to a dance-off. In the end, a policeman tells him he is in a No Moonwalking Zone, and when Michael turns to point to Spike, the rabbit has already left.
The policeman then asks for his autograph on the ticket. Just as Michael is preparing to leave on his motorcycle, the rocky crag in front of him morphs into Spikes head, who then nods to him, leaving Michael one-upped by his own alter-ego. He seems happy enough as he leaves.

From Bruce Swedien - Michael’s Recording Engineer ~
Liberian Girl is one of my absolute favorites of all the music that I’ve done with Michael. Who could think of a thing like that, except Michael Jackson? It’s astounding - the imagery, and everything else in it. It’s just an amazing musical and sonic fantasy.
I love the intro. Quincy had Leta M’Bulu say, “Naku penda piya - naku taka piya - mpenziwe,” (I love you, and I want you, my dear!) in Zulu, in the intro and in every turnaround. I think that sexy, little speaking line gave the Liberian Girl an identity in this wonderful song. Really nice. Michael’s vocals on Liberian Girl are absolutely stellar! The lead, and the big, block background harmonies. Wow!

Promo video, directed by Jim Yukich, featured many of Michael’s celebrity friends who wait on the set to film the music video for Liberian Girl, only to discover he was filming them all along. In order of appearance: Beverly Johnson, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Sherman Hemsley, Brigitte Nielsen, Paula Abdul, Carl Weathers, Whoopi Goldberg, Quincy Jones, Jackie Collins, Amy Irving, Jasmine Guy, Rosanna Arquette, Billy Dee Williams, Lou Diamond Phillips, Olivia Newton-John, John Travolta, Corey Feldman, Steven Spielberg, Debbie Gibson, Rick Schroder, Blair Underwood, Weird Al Yankovic, Bubbles, Suzanna Somers, Lou Ferrigno, Don King & son, Mayim Bialik, Virginia Madsen, David Copperfield, Richard & Emily Dreyfuss, Danny Glover, Olivia Hussey, Dan Aykroyd, Steve Guttenberg.
Michael wears a candy apple red shirt, thin black tie and his black pants with buckles all the way down the leg. He dedicated the video to Elizabeth Taylor.

Song written and recorded by Michael. It rides along a slick, winding jazz-funk groove!

Michael wrote this song especially for the soundtrack of Captain Eo, the fabulous Disneyland-Epcot Center 3-D movie in which he stars as an outer space adventurer. It originally featured in the short film Captain Eo, a 17 minute 3D space fantasy shot for Disney and premiered at the Epcot Center in Orlando, FL in 1986. Costing $30 million, Captain Eo was billed as ‘a celebration of triumph over evil’, and was directed by Francis Ford Coppola and produced by George Lucas. It’s the first song released from the Captain Eo score.

From Michael ~ Captain Eo came about because the Disney Studios wanted me to come up with a new ride for the parks. They said they didn’t care what I did, as long as it was something creative. I told them that Walt Disney was a hero of mine and that I was very interested in Disney’s history and philosophy. I wanted to do something with them that Mr. Disney himself would have approved.
In the end, they asked me to do a movie and I agreed. I told them I would like to work with George Lucas and Steven Spielberg. It turned out Steven was busy, so George brought in Francis Ford Coppola.
I flew up to San Francisco a couple of times to visit George at his place, Skywalker Ranch, and gradually we came up with a scenario for a short film that would incorporate every recent advance in 3-D technology. Captain Eo would look and feel like the audience was in a spaceship, along for the ride.
Captain Eo is about transformation and the way music can help to change the world. George came up with the name Captain Eo, (Eo is Greek for “dawn.”)
The story is about a young guy who goes on a mission to this miserable planet run by an evil queen. He is entrusted with the responsibility of bringing the inhabitants light and beauty. It’s a great celebration of good over evil.

Song written by Siedah Garrett and Glen Ballard, and recorded by Michael for his album BAD.
A powerful and moving inspirational anthem preaching that social change springs from the individual desire for self-transformation. One of Michael’s all-time great vocal performances. The lyrics tell an inspiring story and Michael asks that we all pay close attention to just what he’s saying. He’s backed by Siedah Garret and one of the world’s most celebrated Gospel singing groups, the Andrae Crouch Choir. A song destined to live forever! Michael’s concept for the music video was a montage of scenes of global conflict selected from news reports. Michael only appears in a brief scene at the end.

From Michael ~ Man In The Mirror is a great message. I love that song. If John Lennon was alive, he could really relate to that song because it says that if you want to make the world a better place, you have to work on yourself and change first. It’s the same thing Kennedy was talking about when he said, “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” If you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and make a change. Start with the man in the mirror. Start with yourself. Don’t be looking at all the other things. Start with you. That’s the truth. That’s what Martin Luther King meant and Gandhi too. That’s what I believe.

From Bruce Swedien, Michael’s Recording Engineer ~ As far as I’m concerned, the song Man In The Mirror is the centerpiece, musically speaking, of Michael’s album BAD.
I recorded the Andrae Crouch choir on Man In The Mirror with only two microphones. I used my favorite pair of Neumann M-49s in the classic “Blumlein Pair” method, one of my unquestionably favorite true, stereophonic microphone techniques. This is perhaps the best known of all single-point stereo microphone techniques.
Blumlein Pair is the name for the stereo recording technique invented by Alan Dower Blumlein for the creation of recordings that - upon replaying - recreate the spatial characteristics of the original recorded signal. The pair consists of an array of two matched microphones of bi-directional pickup pattern, positioned 90 degrees from each other. The microphone capsules are placed as close to each other as physically possible. The Blumlein pair produces an exceptionally realistic stereo image, but the quality of recordings is highly dependent on the acoustics of the room.
I did put a squirt of high-quality reverb from my EMT 250 on the choir. But not much!
This wonderful piece of music has a graceful, natural sounding, dynamic curve to it. From the transparent, burnished brass synthesized bells in the intro, to the Andrae Crouch choir that comes in at the modulation. And, of course, the music climaxes with the huge ending.

Hit No. 1 on both American charts.

Promo short film spliced footage of people who have endeavoured to ‘make that change’ with notorious figures - people like Martin Luther King, John F. Kennedy and Mother Teresa. Directed by Don Wilson.

As the lead clip from Michael’s Moonwalker film, the video combines concert footage, montages of clips of children around the world and historical figures such as Gandhi and Martin Lurther King. The video marks one of his earliest attempts at social commentary through video with a compilation of footage depicting starving children, the homeless, and some of the people who have made a difference.

You are in our hearts, you are in our thoughts, and you are in our prayers.’

The first song the world heard from BAD, the lovely romantic ballad was released a month before the album went on sale and headed directly to the top of the music charts. Michael duets with the beautiful and gifted young singer, Siedah Garrett.
After Whitney Houston and Barbra Streisand both turned down the opportunity to record the song with Michael - Streisand simply never showed, on the day she was scheduled to record the song with Michael. Siedah was unaware Quincy wanted her to record the song as a duet with Michael, until she turned up for the actual recording session.

Lead single from the album, topping the Hot 100 and R&B singles chart in the States, where it was the No. 3 best selling single of 1987.

Song originally written by Michael in 1983; a second version Michael completed the following year was discarded, and he returned to the first version, which he recorded for his solo album, BAD.

Michael gets down, as only he can, in this fast and furious tale of a girl who’s done it all. Those dynamite guitar licks are the work of Steve Stevens.
Inspired by rock groupies, who follow musicians and artists around the tour circuit.
Guest guitarist, Steve Stevens, was Billy Idol’s lead guitarist. ‘I got a call from Quincy to do that,’ said Stevens. ‘I had an experience where I had worked with Diana Ross, where she wasn’t in the studio. My prerequisite to Quincy was that Michael had to be present when I was recording. Michael was very receptive, and he made some sensible suggestions.’

Fifth single lifted from BAD - and the fifth single to hit No. 1 on the Hot 100 in the States, a record breaking achievement! Also charted at No. 5 on the R&B singles chart, and No. 4 in the UK.

B-side featured an Instrumental version.
7” single version replaced the original on later pressings of BAD.

Performed at a Wembley concert attended by Diana, Princess of Wales - at her insistence. ‘I took it out of the show in honor of Her Royal Highness,’ Michael said. ‘She took me away and said, “Are you gonna do Dirty Diana?” So I said, “No, I took it out of the show because of you”. She said, “No! I want you to do it. Do it - do the song!”

Promoted by Michael’s first ‘live’ video, filmed at Long Beach, CA - directed by Joe Pytka. Premiered on MTV on April 14, 1988. Alternate short film featured live footage from Michael’s BAD Tour.
The video, an ode to the perils of groupie love, was filmed in front of a live audience and alternates between Michael’s complex dance techniques, and footage of a woman’s seductive silhouette as she makes her way to Michael’s limo. It’s best known for Michael ripping open his t-shirt and bearing his chest! Michael wears his black buckle pants with a wide red strip running down the outside of the left leg. A long sleeve white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to reveal his black buckle arm guards. A white t-shirt with a cut v-neck. All topped off by his amazing belts with all the hoops and chains!

World Music Award: Number One Video In The World. Michael accepted the award via a live satellite link.

One of the most complex and fascinating numbers on the album. Michael relates the sad tale of a girl named Annie. Near the beginning of the song, listen carefully for a recording of Michael’s actual heartbeat! His heartbeat was recorded by Dr. Eric Chevlan, and digitally processed in a synclavier.

Featured in Michael’s ‘movie like no other’, Moonwalker, which cost him an estimated $27 million, and premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in France on May 18, 1988.

Michael sang extra lines in the film version, compared with the album and single versions - it’s believed these were part of the original studio version, but were taken out prior to the album’s release, possibly to reduce the running time.

Brit Award: Best Music Video of 1988.

People’s Choice Awards: Favorite Music Video.

The short film with its 1930’s niteclub setting and gangster theme serving as the backdrop, presented some of the most memorable spectacular choregraphy ever seen! It showcased Michael’s trademark anti-gravity lean, has several versions and features Joe Pesci as his nemesis.
Michael and his back-up dancers created an unforgettable moment in the video when they all stood in place and leaned forward at an uncanny angle. On film the effect was achieved with special cables to support the dancers: it was a graceful illusion, a trick of the eye not unlike his famous moonwalk.
When he went on tour, Michael needed to recreate the effect. He tweaked it to work on stage. He personally conceived and patented a special antigravity shoe with a hole in the heel. A peg comes through the floor that allows live dancers to lean toward the ground at uncanny angles.
Michael wears a beautiful white pin stripe suit, royal blue silk dress shirt with a matching arm band, and a matching handkerchief in his breast pocket. A white tie and white suspenders topped off with a white Fedora trimmed with a black band.

There are currently four alternate versions of the short film:
Original Moonwalker Version - as seen in the film.
Edited Moonwalker Version - as included on Michael’s home video, HIStory on Film Volume II.
The Sped Up Video - as seen during the Moonwalker closing credits; this version was included on the Visionary reissue of Smooth Criminal.
The Album Version - most commonly shown by music video stations; a version edited to be in-sync with the album version of the song.

Live performance by Michael, at his Dangerous Tour concert in Bucharest, Romania, on Oct. 1, 1992, featured on the DVD released as part of his box-set, The Ultimate Collection, issued in Nov. 2004.

Featured in the film, American Pie 2 in 2001.

Highly successful cover version by Los Angeles rockers, Alien Ant Farm, in 2001 which Michael approved: ‘I fell in love with it,’ he said. ‘I heard it and gave it a triple A.’ Promo video parodied several of Michael’s short films.

Leave Me Alone is a delirious stop-motion ride through an amusement park of Michael’s own life. A direct reply to his critics to stop obsessing about him, it’s a frivolous send-up of the rumors that followed him since Thriller.

‘I worked hard on the song, stacking vocals on top of each other like layers of clouds,’ said Michael. ‘I’m sending a simple message here: Leave Me Alone! The song is about a relationship between a guy and a girl, but what I’m really saying to people who are bothering me is: Leave Me Alone!’

Released as the eighth single from BAD in many countries, charting at No. 2 in the UK, no USA release.

Promoted with a humorous, animated short film, directed by Jim Blashfield and Paul Diener - featured in Michael’s ‘movie like no other’, Moonwalker. Included, a clip of Elizabeth Taylor’s movie, Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, plus footage of Michael’s chimp, Bubbles, and his llama, Louise.
In this animated video which features Michael himself fashioned into an amusement park surrounded by newspaper headlines, Michael parodies the tabloid frenzy and media misconceptions about his personal life, including a scene where he dances with the Elephant Man’s bones, and passes through a shrine to Elizabeth Taylor.

Grammy Award: Best Music Video, Short Form. Moonwalker also picked up a Grammy nomination, for Best Music Video, Long Form, but Michael’s sister Janet took that award, for her Rhythm Nation 1814.
